Ipoh 2025 - Gerbang Malam Shopping, OngKee Dinner, and Chloe Co Dessert (Day 1)

Ipoh is really a very small town. You can cover the Old Town and New Town in half a day! You have to walk really slowly to really appreciate all the old buildings here though. Above is one that caught my attention. With the red lanterns hanging around it, it looked so Chinese!

We found ourselves at Gerbang Malam Ipoh New Town area. Since I was here, might as well do some shopping so that I have less things to carry around the next day. Above is  one of my favourite shop here, Lam Fong. I always buy the instant white coffee mix here cause it was the nicest tasting one to me. It's less sweet, and slight bitter. Buy 3 get 1 free, so I also influence my friend to try one packet to bring the average price down for me.

My cousin also asked me to get a packet of HorKaSai, which is actually Malaysian style mocha. Since the Buy 3 Get 1 Free offer can be used for a mixture of coffee, I got 2 packet of this and 1 normal one, while my friend got just the normal one. Yay! One of my mission accomplished.

I also saw my favourite biscuit store opening new shops nearby. I still went back to the old one and bought a box. I offered a piece of biscuit for my friend to try, but he didn't seems to like it very much. I got a box of 8 the next day for myself. That was my 2nd mission. The 3rd is of course, salted baked chicken!

For dinner, we initially wanted to go to Tuck Kee, but it was not opened. Nearby I saw that the famous Ong Kee was opened, and at around 5pm on a rainy weekday, it was pretty empty. So I suggested we have that for dinner. I mean, this was the most iconic chicken bean sprout rice in Ipoh, so it was only appropriate I let my friend try it! Above is the menu for your reference.

We ordered half a chicken to share, bean sprout, and koay teow soup. I love everything except the bean sprout cause it was laced with too much pepper! After dinner, we decided to go back to Old Town to get some dessert. We initially wanted to go to another cafe, but they didn't have the pistachio tiramisu that was advertised outside their shop. So we ended up at Chloe's instead.

Chloe's is made up of two shop houses, one is where the service counter is, and the other is a very cosy place to sit and enjoy your dessert and drinks! Above is what it looked like. We took the dining table seats instead.

The menu for reference. If you convert the prices to SGD, it's actually very nice price. So I can see the draw on why so many Singaporeans love holidaying in Malaysia.

Ta-dah! Above is what we offered. The total was more expensive than our dinner bill! But it was cheaper than Nimmies at JB! Plus the Crombolina and sparking drinks were really nice too. So I was rather happy we stopped by for dessert. It made no sense to spend more money on dessert than a full meal, but I guess whatever makes you happy!

After dessert, walking back separately to our different hotels. The town was super quiet at night on a weekday. I kinda like it. It was like you had the whole place to yourself. Some might call it dead, boring. I think it's cosy. I like the old town area a lot, especially in the early morning, and late at night.

Before I end this post, say hi to some of the cats we saw that day. Above, Pomelo at Gerbang Malam's shop. Lol. Looks almost like a stuff toy!

Say hi to Japanese Nyah-Chan found near the Hakka Museum shops. Nyah-Chan looked so handsome with his collar and bells on.  Lol.
