Taiping Road Trip 2024 - Food Diary

A road trip with my cousin would not be a road trip without food involved. And I've heard so much about Popiah in Taiping that I can't quite understand why you would drive so far just to eat it when we have perfectly nice ones in Penang! Well, my cousin took me to this Air Kacang Kopitiam for my first makan stop.

We had popiah, soya bean, and soya bean curd. Everything was delicious! And not too filling either. I love breakfast like these. Although I'm stingy with my money most of the time, I am not stingy when it coms to food. However, I do tend to love going to local shops a lot, so people still thinks I am cheap when it comes to food. But I really prefer to try the local food instead of cafe and restaurant. Local food are usually cheap, filling, tasty and filled with so much culture! People have been eating them for generations. I want to be part of that chain of history too!

We wanted to have lunch at a restaurant my cousin recommended, but unfortunately they were closed. So we googled and found ourselves facing the above two restaurant. I picked the one on the left cause it had a super good looking braised pork belly dish on it's google review page :P

We were the first customer. And it was such a super retro shop, even though we ordered by scanning a QR code. Look at how they serve our drinks, and the cutleries! Confirm a genuine Chinese restaurant! For some reason, it brought back a lot of nostalgic feeling dining here. I felt as if I have travelled back in time to when I was a child again, dining at some restaurant in town with my parents, or attending some wedding banquet there....

We ordered rice and three dishes, none of which was a vegetable dish! We had duck, pork belly, and mapo tofu cause I wanted to try it. The total bill was very affordable! Perhaps in the range of 60+rm? So filling and delicious too! Would definitely come again!

Above the roast duck with sweet and sour sauce. The duck was a bit tough but interesting to eat.

But this above was the star of the whole meal. It came pre-cut into 6 cubes. So we had 3 each, and it was so mouth watering good! Just melts in your mouth. When more customer came in later on, they all ordered this dish too. So now, whenever I think of Taiping, I think of this super yummy pork belly dish!

After lunch, we explored Taiping Lake a bit before driving home to beat the peak hour traffic. Even so, we still had time to stopped by Ikea on our way back to have some cakes! For some reason, I love the cakes in Ikea Malaysia. They cost around 10rm a slice, and usually comes with quite unique flavours. But of course, they also taste lovely! After living in Singapore for so many years, I don't recall ever being crazy over the cakes in Ikea before.... Maybe I'll go refresh my memories when I move back again next year! After all, there is a free shuttle bus to Ikea near where I stay :)
