Beijing 2024 - Niu Jie (牛街) Lunch

We did managed to get lunch at NiuJie. Everything here is muslim friendly. On my to-do list was actually to eat some mutton hot pot here, but everything looked so expensive. And like some divine intervention, we walked pass what looked like those Raffles Place cheap eat area for locals, and I instinctively wanted to walk in and eat there even though I have no idea what was served inside or how much. Something just pulled in me! So we went in lah.

Narrow walkways, cramped, and filled with food stalls on both side. It looked more like a take away joint than a place for a relaxing lunch. But it smells good. And the price looked good too!

Walking further and further into wonderland we fell.....

Right at the end we saw this stall. And that was it, we were eating here! The herbal soup smells heavenly!

We got one meat pie, one herbal mutton soup, and one exploding stomach bowl (cause I kinda grew a liking to this dish and still miss it). Pretty cheap and good eats! The sauce was free flow and self service, so just help yourself to as much as you want, any combination you want.

That mutton (it's mixed so it comes with innards and stomachs etc), soup, and that peanut mixed with chilli sauce was a heavenly combination! And even though it's humid and hot inside, that hot mutton soup does not make the situation better, but you won't give a damn either and still drink those herbal soup down like your life depends on it! Lol. It was so nice we went back on our last day to eat there again before heading to the airport.

The meat pie and the exploding stomach. I love that they put so much vegetables inside. It felt kinda healthy eating it. It comes with some soup inside too, probably from cooking those innards, so the vegetables are well cooked. Dipped in those peanut chilli sauce and wow! You've got a fan in me! I hope this dish is not Beijing specific.

For the husband, I recommended him to try the old school fermented soya milk of Beijing. It smells like old unwashed socks! I daren't even try it after smelling it, but he was able to stomach it! Kudas to that hubby! You are so brave! It's a hard NO for me! All in all, I really enjoyed my food trip to NiuJie. Highly recommended. I know some people are bias about visiting muslim community, but just live with an open mind lah! Although I didn't get to visit a Chinese mosque here (mosque entry for muslims only), I at least enjoyed the food here. I do think that mosque could be more open to visitors visiting them though. I always think places of worship should just welcome everyone in!
